Developing the Whole Student at Pickering College

Pickering College Focuses on Nurturing the Intellectual, Creative, Spiritual, and Athletic Potential of Each Student

Pickering College is an independent boarding school—grades 7 to 12—and day school—kindergarten to grade 12—for boys and girls in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1842 with Quaker values, it celebrates diversity in all aspects of the school. This is reflected both in the Global Leadership Program and its commitment to a coeducational environment.

The Global Leadership Program at Pickering College

The Global Leadership Program is Pickering College’s own diploma program, designed to develop students into creative, innovative, and courageous agents of ethical and positive change, true to Quaker values. Three aligned but distinct programs for Junior, Middle and Senior School students differ through the skills and academic instruction tailored to each specific age group, but all progress to culminate in an action-based Global Leadership Diploma. Students at Pickering College understand the global context and possess the skills needed to actively participate.

Experiential Learning Opportunities at Pickering College

A rich student-centred Liberal Arts education prepares students to think critically, independently, and creatively. Students have a wide range of authentic and experiential learning opportunities, within and outside of the classroom, to meet their individual strengths and interests. Educating and developing the whole student has always been a priority at Pickering College. Teachers enable each student to develop their intellectual, creative, spiritual and athletic potential within the school community and beyond. Students work to develop into ethical, responsible, and active citizens who can make a difference in the local and global community.

The teacher advisor program, Morning Meeting, family-style lunches, and the family-based boarding program foster a spirit of community and a caring, friendly environment where students thrive. Pickering College remains true to its founding principles: values, mission, history, and traditions. Students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni have pride in the school and feel valued, engaged, and connected.

Students Benefit from Pickering College’s Strategic Partnerships

Pickering College is a member of an integrative thinking (I-Think) network by the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. In addition, the college is the only independent school in Ontario to have been selected as a UNESCO Candidate School and is currently working towards full membership. It is also the only Canadian school to partner with Facing History and Ourselves, a US-based international organization whose motto is “People make choices, and choices make history.”
