Close-knit Community Thrives on University Campus at St. John’s Prep

St. John’s Prepartory School, a Hands-on, Multidisciplinary Education

Nestled within 2,700 acres of trees and lakes on a university campus in Minnesota, Saint John’s Preparatory School offers a unique educational experience for students in grades 6-12. The Catholic Benedictine co-educational day and boarding school offers a supportive community with access to college courses and amenities.

A Welcoming Community at St. John’s Prep

Community is the cornerstone of Saint John’s Prep. The school fosters a collaborative student environment and welcomes international students to expand the boundaries of that community. “Being Benedictine implies being a strong, supportive community. Our students, faculty, staff, and families really embrace everyone who is a part of our school community,” stated Saint John’s Prep Principal, Pam McCarthy.

50 Years of Programs for International Students

Saint John’s Prep has a well-established international program. Since the 1960s, international students have been welcomed and supported at the school, hosting students from around the world, accounting for roughly 25% of the student population in the Upper School (grades 9-12). Laura Hartog, Director of Admission, said the school is planning to launch a summer ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program in the near future.

While still in development, the vision for the program is to work with students of varying English language proficiencies, providing support for those who wish to improve their English as they prepare to attend high school or college in the United States.

Saint John’s Prep is also planning a new two-week summer camp where students have the opportunity to improve their English, learn outdoor skills, and explore the local area—all while having fun and making friends. The inaugural camp is scheduled for July 2019 and is currently open for registration here.

Academic Support and Advancement

All classes at Saint John’s Prep are college preparatory. Students who meet necessary requirements may have the opportunity to take college-level courses and earn college credit at Saint John’s University or The College of Saint Benedict. Saint John’s Prep also offers an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for students seeking an even more rigorous college preparatory curriculum.

A committed faculty works with students who want to expand their studies. “We have opportunities and the flexibility we need to work with students who have passion for a particular subject matter,” said Principal Pam McCarthy. “We seek to ignite curiosity in our students. We want to do what we can to help our students find their passion while enhancing their profiles for college admittance.” Graduates of Saint John’s Prep have attended prestigious colleges and universities such as MIT, Harvard, Stanford, and Johns Hopkins as well as other top colleges and universities around the world.

Hands-on, Multidisciplinary Education

Saint John’s Prep has many activities for students, including competitive and intramural athletics, music, theater, student publications, and other student clubs. Students also have access to university facilities, including dining facilities, fitness centers, swimming pools, libraries, theaters, and more.
