Southwestern Academy

Exploration and Inspiration in the American Southwest

Surrounded by desert, rolling hills, fruit trees, and significant landmarks, students are encouraged to thrive at Southwestern Academys two historic campuses in Arizona and California.

Beaver Creek Ranch

The 180-acres in Rimrock, Arizona— that make up the Beaver Creek Ranchwere originally homesteaded under a grant from Theodore Roosevelt. It is there that 50 students collaborate in a study hall inspired by a hogana circular home used by the Navajo peopleand socialize in the Rimrock Room with its rough-hewn timber ceilings, adobe fireplaces, and Native American pottery, providing a cultural experience for all.

San Marino

The sun is almost always shining on the red-roofed buildings of San Marino, which are surrounded by gardens in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley near Los Angeles. The history of the land can be traced back to the legalization by Abraham Lincoln, and the schools 145 young scholars dine and study in a former California governors mansion, now known as Pioneer Hall. Students can relax in the Chapel, built in 1946 by alumni, which houses meetings, concerts, and a variety of school performances.

Immersion in Creativity and Exploration

At both campuses, students are encouraged to explore outside the classroom.

San Marinos visual and performing arts complex includes vocal and instrumental music areas and offers the latest technology for multimedia arts. Young scholars at the California campus can discover further inspiration at the Huntington Library, arts collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, as well as other nearby Pasadena and Los Angeles museums. The city life offers students opportunities to attend concerts, theater performances, and other cultural events.

At Beaver Creek, students can discover the unknown by using a powerful deep-space viewing telescope. They can also explore the immense rock-layered Grand Canyonwhich is about two hours awayand other United States National Park lands. Horseback riding, camping, mountain biking, and participating in other adventure activities truly make the campus unlike any other.

Classrooms Structured to Help Students Achieve Success

Assisting young scholarsfrom grade six to twelveget the most out of their education is a top priority for the dedicated teachers and faculty at Southwestern Academy. With a pupil to teacher ratio of 6:1 and average class sizes of 8:12, active participation and collaboration is encouraged. Classes are grouped according to achievement level, rather than by age, to help all students perform at the highest level.
