Improve Your English and Experience American Culture on Your Timeframe

How do you know if you should attend a short-term ESL program?

  • “I don’t have much time off (from school or work).”
  • “I want to improve my English.”
  • “I’m interested in American culture.”
  • “I’m on a budget.”

Does this sound like you? If so, a short-term ESL program could be the right fit for you! Many private English language schools, as well as universities and colleges, offer 1- to 12-week programs meant for students, professionals, families, groups of teachers, you name it, who want to improve their English and experience the best of American culture.

The structure for many short-term ESL programs is instruction for 20 hours per week in the mornings and afternoons, filled with exciting excursions to nearby historical and cultural locations. For example, after class on Monday, you meet with your American conversation partner (arranged by the school so you can practice with a native speaker), Tuesday you and your cohort take a trip to see a local lake and waterfall (hiking!), Wednesday there’s an afternoon picnic in the park, Thursday there’s a trip to a local matinee, and Friday the school has arranged to take you and your new friends for a night out in Chicago, New York, or Houston. These programs create a delightful blend of American language and culture.

Summer: A Great Time for Short-term ESL Programs

If it’s getting cooler in June, July, and August where you live, it’s getting warmer in North America. Most US primary, secondary and higher education students have the summer months off; and many business professionals take vacations to enjoy American summer favorites: cookouts, festivals, baseball games, concerts, and everything from hot-dog eating contests to waterslides to horseback riding.

Among short-term ESL summer programs, you’ll find ESL for teens, college preparation, business, Intensive English, TESOL, and more. Many of the institutions in this guide boast unique and customizable short-term ESL programs too. Schools will often tailor a language and culture program for a group, so get your classmates, friends, or family together and inquire!
