Be Part of a University Community in the Heart of the United States

At Southeast Missouri State University, 11,000 studentswho come from 52 countriesare encouraged to embrace a global worldview on a safe and quaint college campus. The president of the university is originally from Mexico, and came to the US as an international student himself. He has used his experience to create a welcoming, supportive environment and build programs to ensure the success of international students.

Since 1978, the International English Programs at the university have helped to foster that multicultural community, by providing classes in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar. The courses empower scholars to improve their language skills and prepare for bachelor’s or master’s studies at Missouri or other campuses across the United States. With conditional admissionmeaning students can seamlessly continue their degree-focused studies at Southeast Missouri after their languages studiesthat transition is made easier.

English courses are taught 20 hours a week in five eight-week sessions and emphasize US academic cultural and critical thinking in addition to specific language studies. Outside the classroom, the Southeast Buddy Program pairs international scholars with Americans to meet for monthly social activities, movie nights, and conversations to improve their English and meet new friends. Southeast Serves is another community-focused program, which brings students, faculty, and staff together to engage in service projects such as managing food banks, serving food, or assessing a communitys needsall with a focus on real-world learning and problem solving.
